College Football Is Becoming The NFL Whether We Like It Or Not
Key Takeaways
- College football is increasingly resembling the NFL due to massive television deals, conference realignments, and the growing influence of money on the sport.
- Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals have fundamentally transformed recruiting, shifting the power dynamic and helping level the playing field for programs outside traditional powerhouses like Alabama.
- The transfer portal creates a 'wild, wild west' environment where roster management feels less like a campus tradition and more like professional free agency.
- Judicial injunctions and legal rulings are increasingly overriding conference and collegiate governance, turning eligibility rules into a moving target.
- Significant tax write-offs for large donor contributions play a major role in fueling the millions of dollars flowing into modern college football NIL collectives.
College football is back, and so is the annual identity crisis: is this still a campus sport, or is it just the NFL with a marching band? We kick things off with some loose pregame banter and a big show update, then jump straight into the mess that’s reshaping the sport right now, including court rulings that can blow up conference decisions and make eligibility feel like a moving target.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is college football becoming like the NFL?
Yes, between massive conference expansions, multi-million dollar NIL payouts, transfer portals mirroring free agency, and talks of expanding playoffs, college football increasingly mirrors the professional structure of the NFL.
How do NIL deals affect college football parity?
While critics argue NIL ruins traditional amateur sports, supporters note that it has helped decentralize talent, preventing a single dominant program like Alabama from hoarding all the top five-star recruits.
Why is the transfer portal controversial in college football?
The transfer portal allows players to change schools with minimal restrictions, creating challenges for coaches trying to build roster depth and leading critics to compare it to unchecked professional free agency.
Are NIL contributions tax-deductible?
Yes, many substantial contributions made to university-affiliated NIL funds by wealthy donors qualify as tax write-offs, which significantly drives the massive influx of money into college programs.

Welcome And The Move To Video
IntroFrom our humble backyard studio, this is the Almost Famous Radio podcast with your host, Jeffy McJefferson. Let's go.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd welcome to the Almost Famous Radio Podcast. Jeffy McJefferson here. We've got L dude. Hi, L Dude.
SPEAKER_06Glad to be here, man.
Jeffy McJeffersonWe got Mike. What's up? And Pete from the Netherlands. What's up, Pete?
SPEAKER_03Hi doing. Thanks for having me again.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou bet. Yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be a lot more better if that oh that's not better. That's not gonna tell you the term. That's well, that's Southwest Oklahoma fucking you know shit. So country music loving the city. It's gonna be better. It's gonna be better than that the uh up the ass thing. You ever seen you hadn't seen that yet? Oh yeah.
MikeLooks good.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah.
MikeIt's gonna be on video here pretty soon.
Jeffy McJeffersonIt's gonna be on video. Oh yeah, that's that's another thing I wanted to tell everybody, man. We're gonna this is gonna be our kind of last audio, our last audio podcast because we are gonna go video, so it's gonna take me a little bit of time to figure this shit out, you know, that kind of stuff. So what you drinking, L dude?
SPEAKER_06Hey, uh, first of all, my face is for radio. Uh he's gonna make it more better. I I will make it more better. I will make the show more better, but probably not with my face. But I'm doing a fresh hazy IPA from Deschutes Brewery out of Bend, Oregon. Bend, Oregon.
Jeffy McJeffersonCan't imagine what Mike's drinking.
MikeBlood orange surge, baby.
Jeffy McJeffersonStronger than anything you guys are drinking. Yep, and I got volatile substance from Bonnie Bert. And what's going down over there, Pete? You got an energy drink, right?
SPEAKER_03I got an energy drink. I got to drive. Maybe, maybe, maybe.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou gotta drive.
MikeIf you saw the koozie of Jeff's beer is in, though, you would not be happy.
Jeffy McJeffersonIt's called a seven-time national championship. You know, I'm kind of glad you mentioned that. I'm kind of glad you mentioned this. Oh Pete, help me out. Here we go. You know, between all four of us, you know, there is like, I think what, sixteen national championships combined out of all four. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. So there's some other links. Pick another team. There's like six, there's like sixteen national championships between all four of us.
Judge Rulings And Eligibility Chaos
Jeffy McJeffersonYou're starting off in a tell me he grew up in Michigan.
SPEAKER_06You're aggravating me. You're aggravating me.
Jeffy McJeffersonThis is all for him. This is all for Mike.
MikeOh, okay. Wait till next weekend when we talk about you see that game? Yeah.
Jeffy McJeffersonThere you go. So actually, the we're gonna talk about this is college football big time today. Thank God we are here. A couple things I want to start. First thing, kind of on a on a it's it's so crazy right now with college football. What about this judge that did an injunction to let these guys come in from the from the NFL back to college? Oh, Lane Kiffin. Yeah, Dequan. You heard about that, Pete?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Dequan Wright wants to go to the I mean, where does it end? I mean, they fucking killed it with the nil, in my opinion. They always you know, college football was always pure and stuff like that, and with the nil they killed it. And now they're bringing back ex-NFL players for their last eligible year. Come on. How fucked up is it?
MikeWell, did you hear about this, Elvis? It's only LSU, correct? Just Lane Kiffin's only one doing it, right?
SPEAKER_06No, okay. No, actually, no, though I think there's 17 potential NFL guys and the SEC came out and said we're gonna trying to come back. Just Lane Kiffin is like is like the most prominent. But no, I'm I'm on the same page. The judge says the SEC can't find them or no. I'm on the same page with Pete.
SPEAKER_03Let me look it up. There are two guys.
SPEAKER_06There are two, but I know I think there's uh just a few more that that we haven't heard of. Xavier and Harris. That may be right.
unknownYeah.
MikeI think this would be the last year that you have you deal with this because it's the five-year eligibility thing is is going to be.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was 2022, right? Yeah.
MikeYeah. But it's still, it's like it's it's absolutely ridiculous. I mean, I remember when you couldn't give these I I was at a college football camp one time. I took my son there, and I remember talking to a college coach, and he said, you know, we can we can put out the mustard and the lunch meat and the bread and the mail, but we can't put it together. They have to do it to themselves. Otherwise, it's an unaccepted gift for, you know, like because they're amateur athletes, right? And you can't give them a gift. And now here it is, uh, but the quarterback for uh is it not not who's the one who's seven million? Is it NAL value?
SPEAKER_06Which one?
MikeYeah, well, but it's like it's like it's say he's the highest one. I think he's I mean he transferred from school again.
SPEAKER_06He transferred to Miami. Yeah, Miami. Yeah, the name of Mensa, yeah. Yeah, the name escapes me, but yeah, he's the first seven million dollar quarterback.
MikeSeven million dollars is his NIL value. And in the past, they couldn't put the sandwich together for the kids.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, this this is I know, I know that's crazy. Back to our topic quickly. Um was that? Uh I'm a I'm a gray-haired old guy now, but I do have one more year of eligibility. See? And I, you know, I played my four years, but you know, I was lucky enough to make the travel team as a so as a freshman and uh played in enough quarters that that uh in enough games that I had to burn that year, damn it. But I got one more left. So can can anybody, you know, NIL for a 62-year-old running back. Yeah, yeah.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou know, hey, uh short down hey Lane Kiff, Lane Kiffin, if you if you listen to this show, which you probably don't, he's a short down guarding specialist. Yeah, we yeah, he's a short yeah, short yard. Except for a foot or two.
SPEAKER_03Let's give the man a pre-inted rocking chair. Yeah, yeah, man.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah. I'm ready to go. I'm ready to go, Lane. Yeah, if you you yeah, he you want him, if you want to all start, you got him right here. Right here. Yeah. Yeah. I was all stop before all. But yeah.
SPEAKER_03No, but but seriously, where where where where's security? I mean, they're buying players now.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, they always have Pete. Just now it's players.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, anyway, but ask SMU.
MikeIt's just now it's just right out in front.
Jeffy McJeffersonIt's not I mean but I but I see I see what you mean though, Pete. I mean, I understand where you're where you're going with that because it's like, eh. But you know, like like the conferences, you know, they said, okay, enough is enough is enough. This is bullshit. And then a fucking judge has an injunction on it.
unknownYeah.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah, yeah, yeah. Stay in your lane piece of shit. Don't you have fucking crooks to put in jail?
MikeWhy is this a legal issue? It should be an administrative issue where they say, here's how we're gonna govern our conferences.
Jeffy McJeffersonOver here, Pete, now this is what sucks, okay? That it doesn't really matter what it is. A judge is gonna come in and they're gonna slap an injunction on it and stuff like that. Doesn't matter. And this judge happens to be from uh Louisiana. Mm-hmm. Check the box. Exactly.
SPEAKER_03So it's a fucking school. It's a school.
MikeOnly for all the other students except for the 105 that are on the college roster.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
MikeBut it it's I know there are boosters, there are people who pay money and shit, and you know, and but yeah, well, but well, there's the problem that I have is how is it you get to billionaire boosters who are putting money into this program, Uncle Phil? When do they start all of a sudden well, not Phil, he doesn't do this, but all the other billionaire boosters, when do they start saying, I want to have a say in what's being done? And how do you control the fact that are they running things now? What where's the head coach have a say? When does the AD have a say? I mean probably. Yeah. If you're putting that kind of money in it, and if you're the kind of person which, you know, billionaires tend to be a little bit egotistical, it's like, I want to tell you, here's what I want done. Oh, sorry. But I mean, it's it's it's that is that there's another logistical problem that I'm sure all these ADs and coaches are facing. It's like, we want your money, but keep keep the fuck out of my decision.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah. Okay, Pete, you're not, you're not really a big NIL. I kind of come I kind of come around on NIL since you and me talked, LD. I don't I don't really think NIL is really fucking things up.
SPEAKER_03Somehow well, somehow I can understand because the kids are are are playing their hearts out and and and and and the risk of being hurt, you know, and playing for your school and and stuff like that, you know. And it's it's in the beginning with Prime, you play what age are they? Around 20. So you play around 20 and go hope to go to the NFL. So I can understand you want to take as much money as fast as you can.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah, and the thing is, is that like I said, I I before I was like, ah, this this is bullshit, blah, blah, blah. This, you know, this takes away from the game like you were talking about. But I kind of come around on the NIL thing because it's it's like uh they're gonna get they're
Booster Money And Who Controls Teams
Jeffy McJeffersongonna get paid one way or another, okay, whether it be under the table or and all this sort of shit. Now, if you've not noticed this, and I don't know if any of you guys have, ever since NIL started, Alabama doesn't have like 17 million five stars playing for them right now. There is that.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Oh yeah, okay. But I come uh a question about the nil. Yeah? If we're starting with the nil, and it's okay to the nil. Yeah. When will Reggie Bush get his Heisman Trophy back?
Jeffy McJeffersonHe did. He did. He did.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
Jeffy McJeffersonHe got it back.
MikeOkay.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah.
MikeI'm all for Alabama having not the top guys, but but I'm just saying limiting your window down of schools that have the money. But you know, now they're trying to advance the college playoff to 24 teams. It's like it's it's all about the money. That there's not there's no way that you have four teams maybe legitimately can win a national championship, and you don't want to have a tournament with 24 now.
Jeffy McJeffersonSee, El Dude and I were talking about NIL and transfer portal, and I think we both agree. I still I still hate the transfer portal. Do you still hate it? Amen.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, me too.
MikeI mean free agency doesn't happen that easy.
SPEAKER_06It's the wild, wild west. I mean and there's just no rules, and it's it's uh all about uh everybody thinking about themselves. I mean when I mean five years ago, ten years ago would anybody have predicted Alabama being picked sixth in the SEC.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_06Right now the preseason This is my utopia. Right now in the preseason, Alabama's picked sixth in the SEC. And to your point, Jeff, they used to have five stars everywhere. Yeah.
MikeWhere's Oregon? So Oh, that's number two. Never mind, that's right.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_06Well, I mean, Oregon's Oklahoma, Oregon's in the Big Ten.
Jeffy McJeffersonOregon's on the SEC.
SPEAKER_06I mean, we're just talking about Alabama's dominance five, six, seven years ago, and and today they're not. And and NIL has leveled the playing field somewhat in in that aspect.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou see what I'm saying? That's exactly what I was talking about, L dude. Exactly. Because it has leveled it. You could SEC was kicking everybody's asses in in national championships and stuff like that. I mean, and now look, they're gonna be able to do that. Big Ten has won the last one.
MikeI mean, you you the Big Ten went to the Big 20, and and they they pulled things, they pulled teams in. The SEC has done that. I mean, they took on Texas and OU went to the SEC when they used to be in the Big 12. I mean, these two power conferences between I mean the Pac 2, it's now the Pac 10 again, I guess. They're they're worthless. So it's like they have combined strengths, which is it's attractive to players. And that happened before the NAL really got going. These two things have happened right at the same time. So you got that you got the fact that we're playing in a major power conference. There's where the power is, there's where the money is. Now the money has flowed like freely. So there's just a few more schools that have access to that. Well, that's the Yeah. ACC and the Big Ten or the Big 12 are they're they're kind of lagging behind. Go ahead, Pete.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because Big Ten is growing and growing.
MikeYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Rumors are that even Notre Dame will be added. They want all their money. They're Catholics. They want all the money.
SPEAKER_06Go ahead, they'll do that. Just to add to what Pete just said, I mean, he's right. I mean, we used to have the power five, now we have the power four.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06I mean, eventually we might just have one or two conferences that are humongous. And that is there, you know those two or three conferences are gonna have 30 teams, and they're the ones that are gonna be vying for the national championship.
Jeffy McJeffersonIs it gonna be like an NFL mold? And then we're gonna have to do the NFL playoffs type type tournament eventually.
MikeGotta get rid of conference games.
SPEAKER_06Well, if we go to 24 teams, it is. It is like the NFL games.
MikeYou have to get rid of the conference championship games because that's just too many games.
SPEAKER_06Well, they're gonna that that's gonna go away. The conference championships teams, because it's a negative for the the losing team, it is it it's gonna go away, and there's not enough money generated from that conference championship to justify to justify the uh the losing team
How NIL Becomes A Tax Write-Off
SPEAKER_06not to make the playoffs because the playoffs them all the money from the networks and and all of that. And let's let I mean I'm gonna go off on a small tangent here, but but but NIL is only possible because of of tax write-offs. All of the schools, most of the schools are state schools, they're all nonprofits. The NIL didn't the NIL money that they're getting from Phil Knight for Oregon, from Ellison, from the Michigan, from Cuban at Indiana, those are tax write-offs. I know millions and millions of dollars that they're donating to NIL. If it wasn't a tax write-off, I don't think they'd do it. That wouldn't do it.
Jeffy McJeffersonSee, this is the brilliance of having L Dude on here because he's a he's a accountant, you know, and he he you know, he he knows this shit. He has three pens in his pocket right now. He has a different perspective.
MikeI love having yeah, he's who wears a pocket protector for a podcast.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. No, but no, no, but but it's it's true what he says. It's it's the same here, you know, with big big companies uh donating money to charity, they write it off of Texas. So it doesn't cost them anything.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so 80% of NIL is tax write-offable. And and they're only doing it. I mean, Phil Knight is not gonna donate all the millions he does to Oregon, University of Oregon, without it being a tax write-off.
Jeffy McJeffersonIt's I don't know. That fucker will pay anything to have those guys win finally a national championship. We got four hundred jersey calls.
SPEAKER_01It just might happen this year. This is the year. But you it just isn't another it's not it might.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but it's not only the nil, it's also what uh what what I think is bullshit, also the BCS polls, you know. Why?
Jeffy McJeffersonOh well the BCS is gone.
MikeThe biggest the biggest school gotta get the biggest votes, so you know, it's fucking you know, I think if the one thing is that and they've talked about this this morning, is that the buy is not a benefit. So if you win and you get to buy, the the the the people who got the buy are one in seven is right now. So you gotta get to where give them the benefit of saying you get a home football game because the we are now we're fighting the bowl system too. All these bowls are used to getting their their bowl money. And so they've had to work with saying, okay, we'll we'll give you this bowl game or that playoff game. It's gonna be a hard thing to with the networks as well as the bowl system is go, look, the the best teams should get a home game, not a bowl game. You get to play at home because the the lower ranked team probably will be their only game they're gonna play because they're gonna get beat by the winner. But you're asking, if you if you got a 24 team, it's like you've got to play four games to win a national championship. That's a lot of fucking travel for your fan base. I mean, I mean, granted, some of them don't care, they got the money, they got the time, but to get the travel for your fan base to make that bowl game seem massive, that's hard. So you have to negotiate with all these bowls to say, hey, the f the top teams get the first two games are home games. That's gonna that's gonna get rid of the conference championship money. They're gonna make it up on that. But then all of a sudden we're saying, okay, then we get the bulls. The problem is now you're having you know the national championship game somewhere in January, late January. I mean, now you're competing with the NFL playoffs. And that's not something you want to do either.
Jeffy McJeffersonNo, you don't want to mess with that.
MikeYou don't want to fuck with the NFL because they will beat you. So there's a lot of shit to deal with there.
SPEAKER_03I know, I know, I know, no, no. But uh as far as I see it, I mean, uh college football is maybe even bigger than the NFL.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, say that.
SPEAKER_06It's NFL's king here. Sorry, sorry, Pete. Uh the NFL wins. NFL's ten times bigger than college football. Yeah. In in the United States. In the United States. I have no idea in the Netherlands, and I have no idea how other countries view it. But you're talking about a multi multi-billion dollar NFL. College cannot compete against them. Even the best ratings in college football are about one-tenth.
unknownOkay.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, here here, Pete, I'll give you this uh for an example. The NBA, okay, used to own Christmas Day. Okay. They used to fucking it was always Christmas Day was always NBA. Well, the NFL says, you know what, motherfuckers? We're gonna start playing on Christmas Day. Yep. And guess what? Guess what? They win it. And they don't put shit games on there on Christmas Day. You know, they play, they have good games and stuff like that, you know. And then the NBA is like oops, we suck. We suck.
MikeOpening day this year in the NFL on Wednesday. Not Thursday, like it used to be. It used to be Sunday for a game. Now it's Wednesday. Now the Thursday night game.
SPEAKER_06Taking over Wednesday.
MikeOh yeah. And now we're gonna go make our teams travel fucking everywhere. Which is that. It's gonna be a problem. I I see health issues for this.
Jeffy McJeffersonHey, Pete, you know what you need to do, man? You need to push for the fucking NFL to go to the Netherlands for a game.
SPEAKER_03We'll come back. We're busy at Annville Europe. We had NFL European.
Jeffy McJeffersonNo, I mean, hell, they're going to Australia, dude. Why can't they go there?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. They were in Berlin.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, I know.
SPEAKER_03See? You guys you They were in Berlin. Start a movement.
Jeffy McJeffersonStart a movement. Start a riot.
SPEAKER_03Let's start a riot. Jeff, Jeff. It doesn't, it it doesn't work here. I'm I'm I'm probably one of the well few Dutch people that really under really kind of understands college football. I was here sitting with my daughter and her friends and they were watching the game. They said, is that professional? I said, No, those are two schools. They couldn't believe it. The attendance. The attendance. And it's the first game. They they haven't even seen a rivalry game like Michigan, Ohio State, or or Oklahoma or Texas.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's kind of crazy, isn't it? I mean, if you could pack how many people into the big into the big house.
Mike109,000 now, I think. 110 plus. Oh yeah. It's ridiculous. Come back to the traffic jam after that. Jesus.
SPEAKER_03Thinking and they're thinking about where the jumbotrons are to build that through.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah, it's so yeah. See, that's that's what's amazing about college football over the over the pros is that they the stadiums are they're are outrageous. Okay. Except for fucking bigger. Except for Jerry World, and who gives a fuck about Dallas Cowboys anyway. But you know, you got Alabama, they're over a hundred thousand. You know, Tennessee over a hundred thousand. Texas is pretty close to a hundred thousand. You know, Michigan and Ohio State, well over a hundred thousand. Oregon's 58, but we're louder than all of you. Yeah, it is a cute little stadium. I've seen stadiums bigger than that. I've seen I've seen high school stadiums bigger than that in Texas. No shit. I mean, they haven't they're big, but they are loud there. They have the acoustics and stuff like that, man. It's a bitch to play there. Like you want to shout.
SPEAKER_03I got to hand it to Michigan with the add-on to the stadium. It looks very good. I mean, I've seen add-ons.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah, it's hard to get that damn thing bigger. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's in the ground.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah, I think Penn Penn State, I think, is over a hundred thousand. It's a big one, yeah. Yeah, it's huge. College station. Yeah, and but but you know, only one pro stadium is over. Horseshoe thousand. That's the Horseshoe, Ohio St. It's over a hundred. Is it? Oh yeah. Oh, you mean the the toilet seat? Yeah, no shit.
SPEAKER_03I'll you only have to shit there, but uh We're gonna go shit on that field this year, trust me. Ducks are coming.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
MikeBut yeah, we're gonna crack them up.
Transfer Portal And Culture Breakdown
Jeffy McJeffersonI kinda wanna get real quick back into I w I I need I need some clarity from everybody on what they feel about this fucking transfer portal thing, because this is that's what to me is getting out of hand. Is more than the NIL. NIL's fine. Like I said, I kind of come around on it. But but the transfer portal is what's fucking really something something's gotta be regulated about that somehow, some way.
SPEAKER_03You know what it is? If you if you play high school and and you get what do you call it, letter of intent? Yeah, you can't get the scholarship to college. It's a fucking honor to play for that college. You pick a college, yeah? Used to be a free education meant something. Yeah, okay, but you picked that college.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah, that's extra manly that. Go ahead. Anyway.
SPEAKER_03You you used to pick a college by heart, as far as I know. Because you wanted to play there. And now you're gonna oh I picked that college. If I don't like it, I'm gonna play next year there. Where's the moral from college football?
SPEAKER_06I agree with you 100%, Pete. It used to be that way. Now it's a business decision.
SPEAKER_03We're a bunch of old fucks, I know, but you know Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Good call.
SPEAKER_03No, no, I mean a lot of a lot of people say you used to be used to be was always better in my mind.
SPEAKER_06Amen. Well, well, you used to be able to take your three or four visits that that you could take, and then you picked the one that that was closest to your heart, and you wanted to just, you know, be a or the one that brought trippers, strippers. To be a duck, to boat be a Wolverine, to be a Buckeye. Or Oklahoma City. It mattered to you. It mattered to you that now it's a business decision. But also I mean, you're a 17, 18-year-old kid. And I know. I know. But but you're you're 100% right. It's become a a business decision. And they have to do something. They have to do something to limit it to one or two, somehow, some way. But again, the only way that that's gonna happen is is with legislation in our country. And do we want politicians deciding what's gonna happen in in our in our sports? See, that's that's you're exactly right. It's an oxymoron there. This that that that politics should have nothing to do with college.
MikeConferences just make a rule. Why does it have to be run by a judge? Or is it law?
SPEAKER_06They can't do that, Mike, because of officers. Now it's money bald. Yeah. Because of litigation, because of judges, right? Like in LSU. I know. Our our country sometimes is fucked when politicians try to do something, and then the judges can change what they're doing. Just like saying, here are our rules. The politics they're our rules.
MikeWe we set the guidelines, these are rules. I mean, it's the the NFL has rules like hey, you can if you're free agency, you know, you're you're on a contract. These kids sign a contract, they're getting their money, and and Jeff and I have talked about this. Like, dude, if you're going to transfer, then fine. Their school that paid you, they have to pay the other school. The other school that's taking you has to pay them back. We talked about that. LD, remember that?
Jeffy McJeffersonHey, you get the pay that for something.
SPEAKER_06Well, absolutely. I'm in favor of rules and regulations and and guidelines and all of that stuff. But in our country, lawyers need to die.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, here's the thing. Difference between N NFL, okay, because what they've got going on there is ironclad. Okay. We have the NCAA, which is nutless. They're they're they have they've had their nuts cut off.
MikeThey have no freaking no way to even They chased the money before they figured out how to control it.
Jeffy McJeffersonThey did. And and then you know, and now they money control it. What's that, Pete?
SPEAKER_03Sorry. I say people with money control it nowadays. Well, you got money, you got power.
MikeBut but the NCAA just saw all these opportunities. Like, let's combine our conferences, let's get all these network dollars, let's do all this. The NAL came in. Yes, but what they don't have is any way to corral it or control it. And so now if you college coach used to be God on campus, he did whatever he wanted to do, and these players just looked up to him. Now, if that college coach doesn't play you, you're like, well, fuck you, I'm gonna go somewhere else next year, and I'm leaving. And this it's how do you build any kind of depth in your team? Because you know, if you've got a good backup quarterback, he's gonna leave. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Jeffy McJeffersonI mean, so yeah, I agree with you. You get one transfer. See one tra you you are you down with that, LD? One I uh because we talked about this, and I thought that's through, man. I mean, one transfer, one transfer only.
SPEAKER_06Okay. If if we're gonna go deep into minutiae and and talk about something that never awfully happened.
Jeffy McJeffersonThat's an awfully big word for a southwest Oklahoma guy.
SPEAKER_06It'll never happen, I'm sorry, but you can say one transfer, but then the coach can leave. Now the player might be fucked. I mean, there's all kinds of just circumstances. And the problem is, is it's there's no way to get a definitive answer. Well, you're thinking about it for five years max.
Jeffy McJeffersonReal quick, real quick. Can I say something on that though, LD? Okay. Before there was players being paid. If the coach leaves and stuff like that, I can I get that. But now that they're getting paid, Coach Lee's sorry. I mean, you know, you you're stuck. You're you're stuck with okay. If if you're if you're drafted in the NFL and your coach leaves or gets fired, you have to fucking still play there. You can't go, oh man, coach left, coach left, let me go ahead and play for San Francisco or let me play for Miami or let me play for whoever. You know, you can't do that.
SPEAKER_06So you think because they're still getting paid, it still doesn't matter whether Lane Kippen up and leaves? I I does that a lot.
Jeffy McJeffersonI honestly think that that it doesn't matter because I mean, if you're since they are getting paid and it's coming into the check and it's out and open, I mean, this this is not like the old days of Barry Switzer, my guy, the king, who you know, anyway, but it's not those days anymore, man. It's not you know, and they're getting they're getting openly paid. They ain't going to class. You know? It's not it's not like the old days. It's not like the it's not like the old days where where they're where they're like taking a basket weaving class to you know to get A's. It's out in the open now. You know, it's shit like that.
MikeAmateur athletics is done.
Jeffy McJeffersonSo it's like if they're getting paid and then the coach leaves or gets fired, sorry, you know, I mean you're you signed your contract. Nil is NIL a contract. I don't know. I don't know. I'm asking everybody if they're if they know.
SPEAKER_06I mean I do not know. It is, but and we've had a few colleges sue their players that have left. Oh, yeah. We've had I mean it is a contract. I mean, whether you say one or two, I mean, what's the difference? One or two portals. One or two, one, okay, great. You can transfer one time. You got five years of college. Two, one transfer. Okay, you can only transfer two times. I mean, we got guys that transfer four or five times. Exactly.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd that's when I'm that's yeah, but guys.
SPEAKER_03Go ahead, Pete. Guys, isn't uh isn't football two factors, the team and the coach? So if the coach leaves, you still have to team as a player. I mean to play together, so they preach family.
MikeWe're one team, we're together until one of us leaves for more money.
SPEAKER_06I mean, you break it, you bring up a great point, Pete. There's no culture left. There's no there's no team. There's no culture. There's no there's no freshman class. You know, the the 15 or 20 or 30 guys that come in as freshmen and they they you know stick together for four years and and and win a national championship. That's gone.
MikeWell, also the fact that the locker room atmosphere, I mean, you used to have walk-ons who just wanted to I want to play for the school so bad, I'm gonna walk on and try to earn the spot. I'm not getting a scholarship, but this kid's gonna free education because that's what scholarships used to be. I got a free education. That was big. So everybody was pretty much equal, but there were some guys who just wanted to die for that team so bad. Nowadays you got this guy's making seven million, that guy's making four million, this guy's making this, and then you got this guy over here. They're chasing money. Yeah, they're chasing chasing money. How is the family dynamics of that locker room nowadays compared to what it used to be? That's that's a biggie.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou know who this you know who the transfer portal really fucked over? Is Sunday night football when the when all these guys come on there and say what colleges they played for? You know, because they're gonna go, they're gonna go on there and they're gonna go, yeah. So and so and so and so, Duke, West Virginia, Ford State. You know, it's gonna the hell that that that part's gonna have to take forever, man. Just go to their high school.
MikeWhat high school do you play for? Yeah, because you actually committed to them for four years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so it's gonna fuck Sunday football six way.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou know, God.
SPEAKER_06I mean, they didn't even think about that. You know. Well, I mean, we can all agree that that
Teen Millions Versus Education Value
SPEAKER_06it's nothing about scholastic sports anymore. It's nothing about the degree. I mean one percent of all college athletes i end up in the pros. Right. So in the old days it used to be, you know, you got an education and that was important. But now that you're getting one and two and three million dollars for NIL, your education doesn't it it has so little value right now.
MikeAnd the kids are actually paying for their college just being Lib Tard values.
SPEAKER_03I I don't know.
Jeffy McJeffersonI don't politic freeze on the case.
SPEAKER_03I don't really know the I don't really know statistics about how many players who don't make who were in the NFL but don't make it are are are crashing, so to speak, you know?
SPEAKER_06Well it depends on if they spend their money or don't spend their money. I mean I mean right now, I mean in the United States, if somebody was to give you a million dollars and you saved it and you didn't blow it and you lived a reasonable frugal life, you could do it. You could do it for the rest of your life. But unfortunately, most of these people and their families, and that's this and that, they they buy the cars, they buy the houses, they buy through it.
SPEAKER_03That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_06They blow through it now. They don't have an education, and now they don't have a profession because they weren't good enough to make the NFL. Because they didn't go to school.
MikeI think the average career is school, what, four years in the NFL? What's that? Is the average length of a career like right around four years in the NFL?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's yeah, okay, but if if you if you play if you play four years in the NFL, an average player, you make a good, decent sandwich.
MikeDepends on you know your position. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_06Absolutely.
MikeUnless you live way beyond your means. Where's my hangers on? Where's all my buddies from high school saying, hey, can you can you give me some money here? Yeah, in my own garage.
SPEAKER_03You know, you you you come with the nil. You come, you you you you you're gonna play for a college. You're 18 years old, 17, 18, sure, 19 years old.
MikeWhen you start saying, Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, okay. You get seven million. It's a fucking teenager worth a few million dollars. You know, guess what happens?
MikeWell, that's not the most of them. But I mean, yes. They're gonna they're gonna blow through that shit. 18-year-old, 19-year-old, they're gonna impress the biggest.
SPEAKER_06I mean, there's there's offensive guards making, you know, 200,000. Those poor those poor offensive, those poor offensive guards, you know, they're not getting the one million.
SPEAKER_03If you give a 17-year-old millions of dollars, most of the times they're from a certain environment.
Jeffy McJeffersonYep. Well, well said. I you know, true, Pete, but I mean, I think most I mean most of the higher NIL, you know, money is just like Mensa, who played for Duke, and he's gonna play for Miami this year. And they've already had they've already had college experience, and then they're gonna get the bigger NIL checks than than a guy coming out of high school, blue chip, prospect, and stuff like that. You know, I mean he, you know, if you wanna if you want to take your chances on it and go, hey, I'll give you seven million, good luck. But I don't know if that's that's the case as much as it is for like a the a proven sort of player that's already played.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but you got the same situation here with with with our soccer teams, you know, and soccer players. You know, if if you go play for a Dutch soccer team, most of which play you go to Feyenoord or AyOX, and then you will be picked up in Europe and you will be paid millions. You will be paid millions.
MikeBut if you gave me millions when I was an 18-year-old, I don't know if I would have invested it wisely. And I'm just saying a lot of these kids in that situation. Yeah, it would be.
SPEAKER_06I I and I understand that. No, no, Pete, you make a great point, but but for professional players have agents and accounts. College players. They do. Do they have that system yet? Okay, okay. But Pete, Pete, what I mean, like your sock like you're saying soccer and football in in your country, don't they start paying them at 14, 15, 16 years old? Aren't they recruited at that age?
SPEAKER_03The bigger teams like Barcelona and stuff, yeah. Smaller teams here in Holland, no. But the thing I see with not all the players, but most of them, they blow their money. They blow their money.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah.
MikeYou had your fucking young. And you didn't go to climbers.
SPEAKER_06Well, it's not a lot different here. I mean, I mean, the majority of them here do the same. I mean, they really do.
SPEAKER_03They buy huge houses. Yeah. Huge houses, fast cars, hookers, snoring, whatever, you know.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no, I it it's it's just like here. Amsterdam is just like here. I think the the it's a true minority that actually saves their money or invests it widely. Real money.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, make it, make it, yeah.
MikeI was 18 with a million dollars. I would go never go to Amsterdam. Yeah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Every, every week, every week, high class hookers. Jesus. Another one.
MikeThey would know me by facial recognition, too.
Jeffy McJeffersonHookers and blow, baby, hookers and blow.
SPEAKER_03Hookers and blow.
Jeffy McJeffersonHookers and blow. So live it while you can. Okay, so we we got all that covered, and we still haven't gotten anywhere. That's okay.
Week Zero And Rules That Make No Sense
Jeffy McJeffersonBut okay, let's focus on the let's focus on the upcoming season. Okay. First of all, okay, I gotta have a bitch real quick. Why does college football always call the first week week zero week zero? Okay.
SPEAKER_01But they they started playing this week. They started playing this week. So week zero is next week. It's week zero. This is week zero. It's week zero now.
Jeffy McJeffersonWeek zero. Okay. Yeah. So why what okay? I don't I don't get it. Do you get it, L Dude? I don't get it.
SPEAKER_06Well, if you win, are you zero and zero? I don't know. In soccer terms, this is a friendly. We didn't know. I I agree with you. It's the weirdest thing. They call it week zero. And this is just recent. I mean, I love it. And we start in Dublin. How did that start? You know, UNC and who did they fucking win today? TCU. They're both zero. I mean, they're gonna win five games, six games this year. None of the big boys are playing, except for USC got into this week. I was just gonna say, but they're playing. San Jose State Friday. They're playing such a low-level team. It's just so sad. They could play their they could play their JV squad and beat San Jose.
Jeffy McJeffersonOh, oh, I just saw something. Sorry, I I hate the backtrack. Yeah, but I hate the backtrack of all go ahead, Pete.
SPEAKER_03Did the small college colleges already play one game?
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, hell yeah, they're probably in the playoffs already. This week.
SPEAKER_03This week, so college football started a few days ago. But but college college football started a few days ago. They're colleges.
SPEAKER_06I did are you ahead of us in the time zone, Pete? Yeah, but why do they call it week zero? That's the that's the topic. I don't know. I don't know.
Jeffy McJeffersonWe'll get this, but I I did want to make one point real quick, just before, because of all the shit we were talking about before with the injunctions and shit like that with the with the players. I think that probably the most pissed off coach in America should be Joey Maguire from Texas Tech with a Soresby thing. Okay, I agree why, you know, that they said, okay, he can't play, but in that, you know, because he did he did bet he and all this sort of shit, but what now, and he's like, he's probably going like, hang on a minute. Lane Kiffin can bring back a fucking pro or you know, play it in the kid can't bet. And then this kid, you know, can't play for me. Pete Rose. I don't like the guy. I think I think Joey McGuire is kind of a dick. You know, I won't even call him J Mac. I mean that's probably his nickname, but I ain't gonna call him J Mac.
SPEAKER_03But no, J Dick. Okay. So no rules.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut I'm saying though, you know, do you think this guy now now see I'm surprised that this didn't like escalate after all this bullshit with source, because they said, Oh, you can't come back, dude. Go go to the supplemental draft, and the NFL goes, you can't handle the supplemental draft. And so and so I'm like, huh. So but anyway, back to week zero. I just wanted to bring that point up real quick.
MikeWhen is there when is there ever a rule that somebody has to abide by?
Jeffy McJeffersonI I go off a tangent. You know that.
MikeYeah, but dude. It's getting to where there's no rule, and somehow judges are saying, here's judges base things based on the law, correct? There's some law in this. I mean, where's the precedent? Yeah. It's some guy, this one out of Louisiana, shocker, but I mean, get a judge out of Ohio. I I bet he would have said, no, you can do whatever you want. No way.
Jeffy McJeffersonI need I need a judge to go to just do an injunction saying this week zero shit's bullshit. Okay, let's call it week one, motherfucker. Okay. Then then I'll be okay with a judge stepping in, like, hey, you gotta stop doing this week zero shit.
unknownYeah.
MikeSo you know what zero means nothing until you add it behind another number. Then it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger.
Jeffy McJeffersonIt does get bigger. Yep, that's weird how that works out. Yeah, true. You guys, I I cut I kind of want okay. Let's go into the let's get fun. Okay. We now we're gonna go into let's go conference-wise
Big Ten Picks And Rivalry Heat
Jeffy McJeffersonand stuff like that. Let's let's kind of like not pick some winners, but I already know who you're picking, Mike. Shut up. So, but I mean the playoffs are are you know, it's gonna be a playoff, like we always say. Okay, so who are they able to change it though, still this year? Because I know they're still talking about it.
MikeIt's set. It's still set 12 teams this year. 12 teams. Yeah, okay.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut they're trying to push it. Okay, gotcha. So we got Ohio State ranked number one again. Yeah, somehow, they always are.
SPEAKER_01So I know Ryan Day was close to losing his job two years ago.
Jeffy McJeffersonThere he is. Yeah. So whatever the okay, let's go Big Ten. Let's get this out of the way. Guys, why not? Who are you picking?
SPEAKER_06Well, I mean, you guys are saying Ryan Day almost lost his job.
Jeffy McJeffersonI did.
SPEAKER_06I I'm I'm sorry. He was on the chopping block until he won.
MikeI don't I don't believe that. I mean, come on. Dude, you lose to Michigan three years in a row, you're on the chopping block. Michigan national championships one year.
SPEAKER_06Of course, lost to Michigan. You're not on the chopping block. Well, it wasn't one year. He lost to Michigan. Three years in a row, he lost to him. Three years they lost to Michigan, but one of the years they lost to Michigan, they won the national championship. Well, yeah. I think that will I think Ohio State would take that over and over again. You would think.
MikeWell, yeah, once he won the national championship, it he got safe. But halfway through that season, they were like, Ryan Day could be done here.
Jeffy McJeffersonOkay, guys, they lost 11 guys to the NFL draft. No, I I guess I I know what you're saying.
SPEAKER_06And they're still number one. But they were still saying a couple years ago.
Jeffy McJeffersonI'm talking about today. Ohio State fans are still.
MikeBut Ryan Day's not on the chopping board. No, no.
SPEAKER_06The Ohio State idiots are they were they were pissed. Yes, they were pissed, but let's talk today. Okay. Okay. He's not on the chopping boat. No, no, no. Number one elimination. No. They lost 11 players to the draft.
SPEAKER_03They will not be number one.
SPEAKER_06And they just no. They just plugged in.
SPEAKER_03With you, Pete.
SPEAKER_06They just they just turn the page. Right. The next 15 five stars are competing for them. They have depth. They have depth at every position. They have one, two, or three, five stars at every position. And all these ten days kids want to play for him.
MikeNo, he's not now, buddy. I was talking two years ago. No, okay. Before they won the city. No, not now.
SPEAKER_06We're talking about today.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Your number one. I'm saying this is how they've a bulk. Now I will say this. I I don't know what the statistic exactly is, but for I think the last five years, the number one team preseason hasn't won it. Has not won it. So Indiana last year. So your point is good that he they probably will not win the national championship. But today, they're number one.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd he's only he's the only coach. He's the only coach in college football that I know that painted a beard on himself with a Sharpie that's won a national championship.
SPEAKER_01And red, red, red blush on his cheeks.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd red blush on his cheeks. And then he fucked with the blue holts, man. Anyway. But okay.
SPEAKER_03No, I really, I really hate that guy. I mean.
Jeffy McJeffersonOf course you do.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but you being a Wolverine.
MikeYou're fucking 6,000 miles away and you still hate him. I get you, Pete.
SPEAKER_03You know, I I don't trust him. No, I don't I don't I don't trust him. I'm I I wouldn't trust my daughter around him. I'm sorry.
MikeYou don't know where your daughter's at right now, Pete. You're not drinking because you're not sure if you have to go get her.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou better have a GPS on Ryan Day right now.
SPEAKER_03She might be with Ryan. Ryan Day could be in the Netherlands. Listen. Listen. I got old friends walking around there what they don't want to fuck with. So she's watching her. Oh, there you go. Watching her.
Jeffy McJeffersonWatching her. Yeah. Try it, Ryan Day. Go ahead and try it. Yeah, see what happens. But now I talk about the hot seat. If if Ryan Day fucked with his daughter, there's a hot seat for you, man. He may not be able to say coach very long.
SPEAKER_03No, I I would wipe this whole fucking family tree.
MikeWe're cutting this tree down.
SPEAKER_03I like you more than a lot of people. No, seriously, but I I I never liked him. I I don't know why.
MikeNo. I I get you. Because I'm an Oregon fan.
SPEAKER_06Of course I get you. Pete Pete. Tell us how you really feel, you know. Michigan being picked fourth or fifth in the in the Big Ten.
SPEAKER_03I think they will rank higher. Depends on, depends on, depends on if they continue too.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut they have to they have to give Carr the starting job.
SPEAKER_06Well he is he is he is select. I mean he's the starting guy as far as I know right now. I think you lucked out by getting one of the best coaches in college football from Utah. Yeah. Winningham is is amazing. I have to I have to say that he did a lot with little at Utah. In the last four or five years with very little. Good point. He has done very, very well. And you know, two years ago beating Oregon twice.
Jeffy McJeffersonI mean in USC. That's badass. You guys scored in USC.
SPEAKER_06So so you might have just, you know, a diamond in the rough there with with Clipper for the next ten years.
Jeffy McJeffersonI was actually I was actually talking to Pete about this when you guys got here, and I was like, dude, man, you you guys actually kind of got lucky, man, with this one, man, because you guys made a great high. Yeah, they have to go. Because I mean this guy, he's not a Michigan man. No. And stuff like that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but do you have to be especially a Michigan man? I mean, just pick the most, the best, the best coach. And especially a coach with how how do I he's character, he's class, he has a great culture.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd he can he can get he can get with these.
MikeAnd I saw something about I read about him out there talking about how you have to preach, you have to hate Ohio State. And he's like, no, that's not how I do things. But I mean he just played him yet.
SPEAKER_03Harbaugh was a class act, but he made Michigan big again as a brand. He didn't know. You can you you can tell no, you can say about what you want, and uh but you Dr. Special Edwards He made Michigan as a brand big again.
MikeAnd and unfortunately, Harbaugh had to leave rapidly after he won the national championship because of the shit he did, but that's okay.
SPEAKER_03Now that but oh yeah I mean I was I was screaming him also every year, please go to the NFL. But uh he brought the national championship back, and but Mike Sheridan, I never believed in it.
MikeWell, neither did the woman he was talking. Sharone, yeah.
Jeffy McJeffersonSharon Moore.
SPEAKER_06No, no, I I mean Sherron Moore, sure.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd unfortunately, and unfortunately he played for OU.
SPEAKER_06But but when that blew up, your your opportunity to hire people, there wasn't very many out there. And I I never predicted you, you know, you go into Utah and extracting him from Utah. But I guess three million more a year kind of makes you say that Utah ain't that great no more. I never saw it coming.
Jeffy McJeffersonI didn't see Whittingham coming at all.
SPEAKER_06No, but they just went, hey, let's go. He was leaving one of the best coaches out there and offer him three million dollars.
Jeffy McJeffersonI think he was, but I mean I didn't think he was retired. It's kind of weird, man. I mean he's like, dude, they they got him. Yeah. And I was like, man, that that's a pest thing. Because there was I don't even know who, like you said, El Dude, I don't even know who was out there on. There was nobody out there. There was any rumors of anything. There was no pool out there to go to Michigan. I mean, uh, you know, avoid trouble. Avoid it like the plague.
SPEAKER_06And be odd.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And and unfortunately, because I'm I I hate the butt guys, but they're gonna be around for ten years. But guys? Yeah, of course they will. Yeah. I mean, they're gonna be around Ryan Day, but I mean, gosh, you you scored when you got winning him. He's gonna bring them back. I don't know if it'll be this year.
MikeHe's close to us getting Dan Lanning, if you're asking for the similarity. Did I transition well there?
SPEAKER_01Transition like this. Have I been cut off?
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. Anyway, critical. It's a laid-back coach with no history, no no no funny things, or you know, no show things, or just you know, hired for his job.
Jeffy McJeffersonLike El Dude said, he did so much with so little at Utah, like El Dude said. I said that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. The high character guy. Oh, you did too? Well, he did too. Well, he said it after I said it. I mean, your biggest problem. Come on, host pay attention. Is that you got Oregon and Ohio State and USC. What's that Big Ten?
Jeffy McJeffersonDon't forget Indiana.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah. Oh yeah. Who?
MikeYeah. I fucking knew this. Dude, I I hate this. I don't want to say this, but that was one of the most amazing college years we've seen. I mean, he had no top prospects. I can't stand that fucking coach. He drives me nuts. I love the guy. Oh fuck, I can't stand him. I did, like he said, I'm gonna have a beer. But that was crazy to come out and do what they did.
SPEAKER_03It wasn't a team from the beginning. A lot of walk-ons, as far as I heard, transfers, stuff like that. It was a whole fucking new team.
MikeAnd Mendoza, as much as I hate, I hate the Raiders, I'm kidding.
SPEAKER_06I've got a serious tangent with you guys. Let's do it. Oh my god. Go ahead. Go for it. LD, it's you. No. Wait. I agree with you that last year was Indiana, and last year was an amazing, amazing thing. We've only lost a few years. But Mark Cuban is not gonna invest in Indiana football for more than one or two more years, and they're gonna be back to Indiana football and win six, seven games a year in the next couple years. They may still compete this year. Have you talked to Mark? I got Mark Cuban on speed dial. He's not stupid. He's not gonna throw away his fucking money. So it's a good way to do it though. He's got done saying it's a great investment, Bert. No, no, he's not stupid, you know, like like Phil Knight. He's not stupid by all these guys in Texas Tech and these guys in Texas. And eventually these guys are not gonna spend the millions to win a national championship. So, yes, right now we're at the pinnacle. So Indiana for another year or two will be good, but then they'll be back to their all the time.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou don't mind if I double advocates, do you? Okay, because absolutely bring it. So Indiana is known for college basketball. Yep. All right. And the Bob Knight era and all this stuff, and winning national
Brands, Stadiums, And Worldwide Fans
Jeffy McJeffersonchampionships. That has not happened in forever. No. So what do they got now? They got a foot. New identity. And so you think maybe this is gonna be a no, yeah. I knew you're not gonna take it. But I mean, this might be the renaissance for Indiana football over Indiana basketball, because I mean it's always been a basketball state. But they made a fucking movie of it. Do you see where I'm coming from on that?
SPEAKER_03I do. I do. Yeah, but but but you need what the as far as I know and what I see here in Europe, you gotta have a brand also as a college. Michigan is a brand. It's not only a college, it's a brand. Why do you sell out? It's just Michigan. No, but it's it's the same as USC, the biggest schools, you know.
MikeAnd Oregon, right? In Oregon.
Jeffy McJeffersonHang on, let him.
MikeHey, work with me here.
SPEAKER_03No, but it it it is. Uh I mean Indiana, nobody knows about in Europe. Indiana, who's Indiana?
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I I I think the colleges who will win nothing, maybe not always the the national championships, but are the colleges that are also well known worldwide. Their apparel stuff. You you can buy in in every country you can buy Michigan apparel. You can buy USC apparel. Yeah.
Jeffy McJeffersonI I kind of How about the Ducks? Well, they always got that payroll.
SPEAKER_06No, no. Do you see duck stuff over duck sweatshirts in the Netherlands? Seriously.
SPEAKER_03Maybe in some some stores, but college-wise, not Walmart. No, no, no, no, we don't have Walmart. But the biggest college brand in Europe worldwide is probably Michigan.
MikeYou know, Pete, I I just amazes me, and I don't mean any disrespect to this. I never thought that Netherlands would give two shits about American college football teams. The fact that you can go and buy a jersey.
SPEAKER_03They don't give. They don't give a shit. But you can go buy that shit.
MikeThat just blows me away. I didn't think you could. Caps, t-shirts, so nothing. I'm starting to understand why you become a Michigan fan. It's only one you saw. Can I convert you?
Jeffy McJeffersonNo, you're not going to convert him. I've known this guy since like 2000. You're not going to convert him. Oh, God. We've talked me and this guy's talk college football since the year 2000. Do we play Michigan this year? We do.
MikeWe do.
Jeffy McJeffersonWe do.
MikeOh, you and Michigan play each other. Yeah. Do the Ducks play Michigan this year? Yes. We do? We play Ohio State, I know. No, no, you play Michigan. We do play Michigan. Do you play Michigan? Oh, Pete. You and I are going to have a weekend of saying I'm buying your drinks or you're buying mine.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's cool.
MikeYou have to come to Cartwright. Okay.
SPEAKER_03What you got? I mean. I would have gone, I would have gone to Michigan Games, but some I don't know if I can say it. Some sand niggers flew some planes and buildings.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you can say it.
MikeAnd then they hired one as their mayor. It's okay.
SPEAKER_01Sorry, Jeff. I'm sorry, Jeff.
MikeI'm sorry. God damn. I just have a new respect for this man.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah. It's okay.
SPEAKER_03It's okay.
MikeLike I said, they hired one for a mayor, so it's okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_03No, but 9-11 game game came in between, or else I would have gone to Michigan games.
SPEAKER_06Oh, okay. Damn. Bad timing for you. Yeah. Well. I mean, come on, man. You're an Oregon Duck fan. Rolling Duck. Oregon Duckman. I wanna say, I wanna I wanna show you the hardest schedule in November on the planet.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_06The Oregon Ducks. Okay. Go ahead. In November. At Ohio State. That's the first game? Oh, it's in November. November. At home against Michigan. Then go to Michigan State and then finish with Washington at home. We play Washington at home? That is the hardest. The hardest November in college football. We start with Ohio State.
MikeYou beat Ohio State there. At least you got Michigan at home. So Pete, the second week of November, there's got to be a podcast. Or there's got to be some way that I can reach out to you and say, I'm sorry. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_03So but but something about the Oregon Docs. It's the most schizophrenic team there is. Every fucking game they have another, they have another jersey. Every fucking game, another helmet, not a jersey. Make up your fucking mind.
MikeNo, Pete. No, Pete. That's what makes us amazing. It's it's we're uh we're like an artist, okay?
SPEAKER_06Schizophrenic. They're doing all psychology models.
MikeBipolar.
SPEAKER_06Come on, Pete. Come on, Pete.
MikeNo, you got Penn State. It's got blue, white. Blue, white, same thing. You got the same thing. Oh, you. You got the same thing with a lot of schools. We like to dice it up a little bit.
SPEAKER_06Michigan uniforms. Same week, same everything. Boring.
MikeAnd what the fuck does that helmet really look like? Wolverine? What is that? Just like fingers.
SPEAKER_03It's like stripes. Fucking most beautiful helmet in the nation.
MikeGod, it's just it's like yellow stripes. Like somebody said, we got some yellow duct tape here. Let's just run it across the fucking helmet and call it good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Pete, Pete, nothing beats duck feathers on a helmet.
MikeOh God. Feather chrome. Oh my God. You gotta see my new truck, Pete. It's got the Oregon logo on it. I'll send you a pic. Well, I can't.
SPEAKER_03But anyway. Ducks are only there to shoot.
SPEAKER_01God damn.
MikeNo, I'm I'm just kidding. We're kidding too, bud.
SPEAKER_01I'm kidding too.
MikeI I wish your daughter could just get home safe. You could grab some whiskey right now, because that would be more fun.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, here's here's your uh tough schedule. You know, uh, you got your little November thing. You have like one ranked team or whatever. We have Michigan. You just we have Michigan and we have Michigan.
SPEAKER_06You just hammered Michigan, Conn OS. Only one ranked team.
Jeffy McJeffersonWe have we have Michigan. How do you feel about that? And we have we got to go to Georgia, we got Texas, we have Old Miss, we have Florida, we have Texas AM, we have South Carolina.
SPEAKER_06Old Miss to go to schools. Oh my god. There you go.
Jeffy McJeffersonThere you go.
SPEAKER_06There you go. You got an SCC schedule. You know, don't worry about no ACC.
MikeThe ACC sits over there and plays the C C when all of a sudden Duke is a tough opponent in the ACC, that's when you know college has got some issues.
SPEAKER_06Well, I mean, you're you're playing the schedule that the the in the conference you're in. Yeah, it's gonna be tough. Wow. Who was but Penn State?
MikeWe're not I think at Penn State this year. You said Michigan State. Penn State doesn't play Ohio State, they don't play Oregon, and they don't play Michigan. Penn State has set up really well this year. As far as record-wise, if they don't pay play the top teams. Because now we're we're not really the big 10, we're the big 20. So I think Penn State's schedule is they don't play Oregon, they don't play Ohio State, they don't play Michigan, and they don't play Indiana. Somehow it worked out.
Jeffy McJeffersonI don't even know what your conference schedule is. What do you got? Rutgers, and then you got Northwestern. And we got 20 teams.
MikeYeah. When you got 20 teams in the conference, you're gonna not play some of the tough ones sometimes. Can I cut in? We do.
SPEAKER_03I'm watching TV. You ever heard of Orange Bike Brewing?
Jeffy McJeffersonWhat?
SPEAKER_03It's from Orange Bike Brewing. It's from Portland.
MikeNo. No. No. Anything comes out of Portland. I'm not real big fan of it.
SPEAKER_06It'd have to be new if I don't know about it.
MikeA brewery? Your beer? You're talking about brew.
SPEAKER_06Brew, yeah, brew.
MikeOrange bike. Orange bike. Portland does have their naked bike thing they do every year.
Jeffy McJeffersonSo maybe it's Okay, we went way too long on the Big Ten, because I mean we already know who's gonna win the Big Bang. Never mind. We already know who's gonna win the Big Ten this year. And it's No, we don't. We have no idea. We have a damn good idea who's gonna win the Big Ten this year. Dude, well we know who's gonna win the SEC too. We're gonna this we're making picks. I don't I mean this is what I'm saying. Who's gonna win the SEC?
SPEAKER_01Penn State doesn't play anybody. You haven't even heard my freaking pick in the Big Ten yet. Oh. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Well we know it is.
SPEAKER_01We know it is. Huh?
SPEAKER_06I am sure it is.
SPEAKER_01Indiana? No. My pick is Oregon this year. I love you. Don't, don't, don't start that. I'm about to come across that table and give you a little bit of a big thing.
Jeffy McJeffersonOkay, who's who's gonna be gonna beat Oregon this year in the Big Ten? I don't know who's gonna beat Oregon in the Big Ten this year. Oregon's stacked.
MikeWith Dante Moore, I think we have what we need. And our defense is tough.
Jeffy McJeffersonDon't win the Big Ten this year. With relative ease.
SPEAKER_06If we stay healthy, Oregon's defense is gonna be number one in the Big Ten.
MikeAnd that will transfer into winning. And Dante Moore has taken another level of confidence. He owns that team. He knows it.
SPEAKER_03If if if Oregon, if Oregon will be to I state, I will run around for feathers on the other.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou know what, Pete? You know, it pained me to say, you know, pick these guys, you know, with these fuckers right in front of me. You gotta understand that, right? It pains me. I'm I'm I'm about to have a heart attack. I thought they were gonna have to send, you know, call me an ambulance and shit like that to send me to the fucking hospital.
MikeFuck, I'll take you. Okay.
Jeffy McJeffersonSo don't call an ambulance. Okay, let's go, Big 12.
SPEAKER_06Big twelve, Big 12. I have to I have to say something. If I can get tickets to Michigan, Oregon, Pete, are you coming? Free tickets for you. I will I will donate into that. Dude. I have the availability to get it I can bring it up.
SPEAKER_03I can bring it up to the missus to see what she said.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou know what? Hey, always, always, always go with a chief financial officer, Pete. That's a great call. That's a great call.
SPEAKER_03Jeff, I told you, Jeff, I told you, women are always right.
SPEAKER_06I'm telling you.
SPEAKER_03You're right.
SPEAKER_06All right, so so let me talk to your wife. Because I got four tickets to the Michigan, Oregon game. And Pete, if you'll come from the Netherlands. The fucker will take you, not me. Thank you. I like you more, Pete.
SPEAKER_03Listen, listen, things are always better from abroad.
SPEAKER_06There you go. Sorry for that tangent, guys.
Jeffy McJeffersonNo, that's a it's it is it was awesome, man. It was awesome. Okay, so Big 12.
Big 12 Forecast And Playoff Math
Jeffy McJeffersonWe got anything. Any twelve? Any thoughts on the Big 12?
SPEAKER_06Fuck.
MikeTexas Tech. They'll have a one or two. If they'd had the quarterback back, that would have been better.
SPEAKER_06They'll have one or two teams in the 12 team playoffs. Not two. I said one.
Jeffy McJeffersonNo, I'm just saying I just don't think two. I don't know if two would do you think two? Maybe? I'm just trying to figure out who the second team would be.
SPEAKER_06I mean health, health, health and quarterback. I just think it was pretty when you start talking about the other conferences, the big four, if if their quarterbacks stay healthy You never know. I mean, but but that's what's so great about football is you need depth. I mean portals, it's a sport that is violent and people get hurt.
MikeI mean Notre Dame's guaranteed in if they're in the top 12 at the end of the year, which they're gonna be, because they're they're good this year. You've got you've got to get an ACC team in, you gotta get Yeah, and then then you have the the smaller conference has their buy-in. With the SEC and the Big Ten.
Jeffy McJeffersonI'm just making I don't think I'm just thinking the Big Twelve get more than one in. And I don't think they'll get I don't think they will either. But I just you know and and I'm not even worried about health right now because I'm just we're just fucking having fun and stuff like that. And I'm I'm uh we gotta go with Texas Tech, right? I would say they're the best bet.
SPEAKER_01The sick had to be if they could have got their quarterback back. So just because they wanted to go get some fresh air. And Whittingham left for freaking, you know, Michigan, so Utah's out. Let's not talk about Colorado, please. Don't put up Sanders.
SPEAKER_06Oh, by the way, did you know that Shador got his number? L. I mean, I mean, who were the top three teams in the in the Big 12?
MikeA lot of them came from the Pac-12. BYU. BYU.
SPEAKER_03TCU. Yeah, well, TCU is not that good anymore.
MikeThey just got beat today by North Carolina. So we could just write the Big 12 off. You're gonna get your conference chance if they still do those, which they still are. They'll get in.
Jeffy McJeffersonCan we write the big can we write the Big 12 off?
MikeYeah.
SPEAKER_03UCF?
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_01Well, okay. Good call. UCF. Yeah.
MikeThe Pac and the Pac 12. I mean, good lord. No, they're not. We're not gonna go there. Why should we? I don't think they have an automatic bid.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut I don't think. So based on what you're looking up, Bill dude. You know, Big 12. Anything look anything looking for Arizona, anything sparking you? I mean all Kansas, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State.
SPEAKER_06I don't know. I mean, I mean, what conference is SMU in? They're they're kind of scary to me. They're like a just a wild pick.
Jeffy McJeffersonAren't they in the ACC now?
SPEAKER_06I think they are. I think they are. I mean I mean the Big 12.
Jeffy McJeffersonDon't follow SMU along.
SPEAKER_06Come on. Texas Tech, Arizona State, Kansas State.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah.
SPEAKER_06I mean, I think you're right. One team will make it. One team. Probably be Texas Tech.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, go
ACC Favorites And Miami Buzz
Jeffy McJeffersonahead. Let's go. Okay, you SMU, you went ACC. Let's go ACC.
MikeYou don't Miami. Virginia. I think it's I mean, Miami's got the top NIL quarterback in the gotta go Miami. What do you think, Pete?
SPEAKER_03I've seen North Carolina playing. Oh no, no.
MikeOh, Jesus help us. They'll be lured in by the hoodie with the short sleeves.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou know, Clemson. Clemson's Clemson's still in the ACC.
MikeFlorida State's still in the ACC. They are. I don't I don't trust Florida State. But Clemson Debo or Dabo. Dude, that guy's he hated the NIL. He hated the portal. He hated that. He's learned that just I think.
SPEAKER_03Florida State.
SPEAKER_06I mean, let's get real. There'll be three big team Big Ten teams, big ten. Miami's going to win this. Miami guarantee. There'll be three SEC teams. Clemson. One ACC team, one Big 12 team. There'll be one Notre Dame. Notre Dame. Yeah. Miami. I see Miami coming out of the A.
Jeffy McJeffersonMiami coming out of the ACC. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06So you got one or two or three maybe from everywhere.
MikeWe didn't well Miami. I would say yes. Clemson, dude, you just can't sleep on Dabo.
Jeffy McJeffersonI mean, you never can. You never can.
MikeBut he just got Dabo has the whole job.
Jeffy McJeffersonThe newest team in FBS is North Dakota State. Are they? Yeah, they didn't.
SPEAKER_01They move over, didn't they?
SPEAKER_06You are the fuck, aren't you? I'm telling you guys, I've watched these guys in FCS. I have too, man. They won so many championships. Yeah. They're in the Mountain West. Can a Mountain West team make the pack make the 12-team playoff? Do not sleep on them. Ever. Pete, you'd love. You would love to stay. I don't think I expect you to know a lot about them, but they have won championship after championship after championship.
MikeYes. Okay. So he's been okay. All right. They're moving up. But they don't have the money.
SPEAKER_01Hey, North Dakota money is big.
SPEAKER_06But they got a but they got a culture. They got a something. Yeah, yeah. They do have a culture. They have a money.
Jeffy McJeffersonHey, you know what? Indiana won with without a bunch of fucking high dollar fuckers. You know, these North Dakota State, they have a culture, like you said, LD, and they are amazing. And you don't want to go up there, and it's not like you had to play in the fucking cold because they had the Fargo Dome. Yeah. And dude, I'm with you because I will I watch them all the time, man, and they are bad asses. All they do is win. They do.
MikeYou know what? Cleveland Browns had a culture too back when they won that NFL team.
SPEAKER_06Just stop in a 12-team playoff. Culture doesn't mean shit nowadays. Okay. In a 12-team playoff, they have that one.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut you have that one team. But do you want to play that team?
SPEAKER_06From somewhere.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd do you that's one team I don't know if you want to play.
SPEAKER_06I mean, who was that team last year?
Jeffy McJeffersonIndiana.
SPEAKER_06No.
Jeffy McJeffersonNo. No, what? Oh. Who's that team last year? Oh, you guys played them. James Madison. Yes. Oh. Yeah. And they've they've made a showing, man. They didn't. They there's not they there's nothing that James Madison did not hang, there's nothing to hang their heads about on that Oregon game, man, because they actually played ball. They have nothing to lose.
SPEAKER_03When you have nothing to lose, those yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Those are teams that are playing with heart and they got nothing to lose. So white. You're right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06It's a bunch of three and four stars.
MikeYeah. Yeah. Happy as hell to be there.
SPEAKER_06Rise up together.
MikeThey're not being a prick saying I'd demand this much money. They just say, I want to play fucking football. I'm a man, I'm going to do it. Yeah, they're making 12 bucks.
SPEAKER_06They're making 12 bucks a year.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah, yeah. Contracts, 12 bucks. They got happy meals for their fine. And then they'll go out there and try to kick somebody's ass.
MikeThere's a lot to be said for what kind of person are you on the inside. Not just what kind of athlete are you, but what are you on the inside? And that's something that is not always looked at when you're talking about recruiting players.
Jeffy McJeffersonI thought James Madison last year was probably the show stealer of the fucking playoffs. Because they I mean, and not because they played you guys, but the way they played you guys. And it was really impressive to me.
SPEAKER_03Talk about talk about team who got nothing to lose. I remember this still hurts for every Michigan fan, Appalachian State.
Jeffy McJeffersonOh, God. Mountaineers. Yeah, they did come into the big house and shock you guys one year, didn't they? Yep. Yes, they did.
SPEAKER_06Well, I think every year we have an FCS school that comes up and whoops, whoops a top whoops a boys' ass. I mean, every year we got them, but but that was one of the that was they they call it to this day the worst upset.
SPEAKER_03The biggest, the biggest setup. Yeah, yeah. The biggest upset. The biggest upset. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah, thank God for them because we lost to Boise State in that fucking bowl game, but we didn't give a fuck because we got raw. We got robbed and we got robbed in Austin. We got robbed in Austin that year, but you know, so it's okay. But but okay, so we so ACC, we figure Miami, right?
MikeYes, definitely.
Jeffy McJeffersonGot Miami.
MikeYeah. Barring something weird. Yes, they will win that.
SPEAKER_01Now the Southeastern Conference.
SEC Title Talk And Texas Hype
SPEAKER_06What do you think? S E C. Oh, it's it. I mean, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Georgia is stacked. Would go there.
MikeExcept for quarterback. They won the national championship with Stidum. I agree with you. Who did not do anything amazing at all. What was his name? He went back to back with a quarterback who was not that amazing. Wasn't it Stidham?
SPEAKER_06Was his name? No, Stidham with Archmanning. Is Arch Manning gonna be the guy at Texas? Is he gonna be the guy? He is.
MikeBut yeah, Stidham with your quarterback at Georgia. Not your quarterback, but at Georgia. Let me enlighten you. Okay. Go ahead. Because he's a backup now at fuck. It's the Rams. Rams. Rams. There you go. Yeah. Rams. There you go. Okay. It's Lets and Bennett. He was a point. It's Bennett. My God. Junior Sitham.
SPEAKER_06Georgia, who's the quarterback? Okay. Yeah. But the number two and three teams in that conference are Texas and Ole Miss. So you got Arch is a little bit down. You got Arch and you got Shambliss. Come on. Oh no, Shambliss is good. He's he's predicted top five quarterback in the next NFL draft.
Jeffy McJeffersonHe got another one of those. I would just isn't he like a bow nix? He's like his in his.
SPEAKER_06I mean, I agree with you. Ole Miss is a question mark.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah. I agree with you. But yeah, we got him this year. But the quarterback is not. No, he's good. I I I thought he played really well.
MikeTexas has the quarterback.
SPEAKER_06Georgia has the and then right there close by is I don't know if it's gonna happen this year, but Lane Kippin at LSU is gonna turn that program. From middle to upper, upper, upper.
Jeffy McJeffersonPete, what you think about SEC? Yeah. I think Texas. You think Texas. Yeah. I think Sarkeesian is, and I'm not saying this because I'm an OU fan, man. Sarkeesian is kind of starting to wig out again, like he used to wig out back when he was in U USC and all this sort of shit. He's he's starting to do this, he's starting to go into that kind of mode again. So not sure. And I Arch hadn't proved himself yet to me.
MikeHe will never prove himself to the hype that he came in on. It's impossible. I mean, he came in saying he could be superhuman. I felt bad for that kid for the hype that he came in on based on his uncles.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, because he went to Texas, so fuck him.
MikeYeah, I get this this he could never have the career that people wanted him to have. The kid has, you know, he's got some skills, obviously, but it blossoms this year.
SPEAKER_06Great. Last year, six last six games last year. It was not bad. He played at a high level. You did? Now Texas can beat Georgia. He's got to continue that.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd Georgia's defense is gonna put a lot of shit in here.
SPEAKER_06I love it that we have bid the big four, but there's big there's only two conferences that that that really have four or five teams up at the top. And everybody beats everybody up. I mean seriously. I mean, Oklahoma can beat you any day. Texas can beat you any day. You I mean, you go down in in the big Big Ten, there's some really good teams that can beat you any day. But when you play them, you're gonna be beat up for the next week. And it's the it's the ultimate toll toll that that the season takes against you in those two conferences.
MikeAnd based on your schedule, like we said, Indiana doesn't play Oregon or Michigan or However.
SPEAKER_06I think when they reach the playoffs and they have a couple weeks off, they get healthy.
MikeAs long as they're able to survive together.
SPEAKER_06That season just tempered them and made them tougher. And that's why those two conferences are, you know, gonna one of them's gonna win the national championship.
MikeI agree. No, I don't see it coming out of the ACC or anybody else. It's just gonna be Big Ten or SEC. Period. Even though they got the hardest, you did. You just fucking beat that thing. Yes, you're right.
SPEAKER_01Pete,
Dark Horses And The Tier List
SPEAKER_01go ahead.
SPEAKER_03How about how about the dark horses teams?
Jeffy McJeffersonYou know what? Miami might be the one. I'm not I'm not gonna dark horse this team, but this is this is my this is kind of my you know, it could be a sleeper team, dark horse, whatever. I'm not gonna be surprised if Notre Dame wins the title this year. Okay, I know nobody likes Notre Dame, but they are stacked and nobody and nobody's really paying attention to these guys, man, and they have got some shit going on that they're gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_06They do have money, they do have the NIL money, and they pick their schedule. I I I agree with you. I'm gonna go off on a super tangent.
Jeffy McJeffersonI don't know. Pete's gonna go off on a super tangent after you because he hates Notre Dame.
SPEAKER_06So I can't wait. I can't wait, Pete. We're gonna sit back and listen to this.
SPEAKER_03Go ahead. I can't wait. Listen, listen. No, listen. Oh sorry, sorry, go on.
SPEAKER_06Go ahead. Let me finish, Pete, and then it's yours. I'm gonna go off on a you said dark horse. You said a team that that that nobody's thinking about. That's what I call dark horse. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm calling it right now, and I hope I hope we have seven more podcasts after this that we can talk about this. USC. Oh fuck.
SPEAKER_01You're a duck fan? You really said that? No. Listen.
Jeffy McJeffersonTexas Tex they've had the best recruiting class, man.
SPEAKER_03BYU B BY U. BYU. US E. Michigan.
SPEAKER_06Texas Tech, BYU.
SPEAKER_03USC Michigan.
Jeffy McJeffersonThat's your dark horse. Pick one.
SPEAKER_06Pick one, Pete. Those are my four dark horses. Pick one. Pick one. And I'll pick a dark horse. It's gonna make the 12-team playoff and win a game.
MikeMichigan.
SPEAKER_06Shocker. Good boy. I'm a duck fan, and I just picked USC, Pete. I'm about ready to kick you in the ass for that.
Jeffy McJeffersonAre they really a dark horse? USC? No. Okay. But yeah, I guess they are. They guess they are. Their defense coordinator used to be the Gary Barnett is a new one. It's a quarter five in the Big Ten.
MikeGary Patterson. Come on.
SPEAKER_03The fact that he Lincoln Riley may play defense is good. I got my Bible in. I got my Bible in front of me. Early championship tier.
SPEAKER_06Pete, Pete, you know what my second dark horse would be? Texas Tech. No. Texas Tech.
MikeI uh I don't think dark horses have a fucking chance. Well, give us a dark horse. No, no, no, but no, they don't.
SPEAKER_06I mean, Indiana is the freak last year. It's not in the top, you know, that's not in the top 12 now that's gonna be in the top 12 at the end. I just don't see the way teams are built nowadays.
MikeBarring injuries, I don't think dark horses have much of a chance. I know it's Madison. I know, but it's just it's just in the playoffs. Okay. But I mean, remember it used to be it's like you had two teams. AP picked number one, number two, and those ones are played. And there was always questions like, well, maybe number three, number four. Now we're talking about 12. Somebody they want to do 24.
Jeffy McJeffersonDude, you get fresh air all the time at a fucking casino and you can't take a chance and pick some kind of a dark horse. You can. No, you. I'm talking you. Oh, who I? Yeah. My dark horse?
MikeFucking Oregon. God.
SPEAKER_06It's not a dark horse. Yeah, it is.
MikeHow many fucking games have we won't national championship we won? How much is a year in? I'm a duck fan, and that's not a dark horse. Well, based on our number of national championships, I'm gonna pick that one.
Jeffy McJeffersonIf you were back in the Joey Harrington days, that would be a dark horse.
MikeYes.
Jeffy McJeffersonOkay.
SPEAKER_01Musk grave. And we're not in, yeah.
MikeYeah. If you want to save the dark horse, I'd pick Miami.
Jeffy McJeffersonOh, you're going out on a fucking limb, aren't you?
MikeHoly shit, chiropractor boy. Yeah. I just think I think they have Amara Cristobal, you know, former Oregon coach. That'd be like me saying, Man, Georgia's my dark horse is here.
Jeffy McJeffersonYeah.
MikeYeah. No, I mean, nobody, I mean, Miami's not. Okay, you want fucking dark horse? Like, do you remember you want me to just pick something stupid for no fucking reason whatsoever? Hey.
SPEAKER_06It's called Dark Horse.
MikeBoise State. I mean, Boise State.
Jeffy McJeffersonIt's called Dark Horse. We're gonna beat Boise State.
SPEAKER_01Dr.
Jeffy McJeffersonSpecial Edwards, give us a fucking dark horse. Do you know what dark horse means? I don't think they exist anymore.
SPEAKER_03I don't think you have a chance. Go ahead. Go ahead, Pete. Early championship tier. Tier one, Ohio State, Indiana, Texas, Georgia. Hey, hey, hey fucker. Did you leave something out? Hang on, he's got his magazine, man. Listen. Tier two, serious championship contenders. Oregon, Notre Dame, Miami, Texas, AM always. Potential breakthrough contenders, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, BYU, USC, and Michigan.
SPEAKER_01That's you do some good research.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that is good. That's very good.
Jeffy McJeffersonHe's got his Lindy.
SPEAKER_03Respect the shit.
Jeffy McJeffersonThat's in your Lindy's, isn't it? No, Pete.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's Pete. Michael Anderson, complete college football preview.
Jeffy McJeffersonPete, Pete, I respect I respect that that ranking. And I might have I might not have heard it right.
SPEAKER_06But are the Oregon Ducks not on that list? There was. They were serious contenders. Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. So I think that's a good thing. I said I might have missed it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, okay. No, they're on top of the club. My apologies in the second group. Serious championship contenders.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd I I my dark horse, and I'm gonna sound like a homer, but I think Oklahoma is a dark horse this year that could that could actually win a title.
SPEAKER_03Potential breakthrough contenders, Oklahoma.
MikeOkay. So Pete, we know who you're sucking off tonight. Okay.
Jeffy McJeffersonAnd and I my dark, dark, dark nurse is Clemson. Because you I I don't I never I never fucking count Clemson out for some reason or another. Oh, Dabble, he's been there.
SPEAKER_06You need to get over that.
MikeDabble just doesn't seem to want to get on the train of where college football is going.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut he's on the train. He's been on the train.
MikeBut he's been behind. He's behind the times a little bit. Now he's I think he's getting it. Lane Kiffin is fucking leading the goddamn train.
Jeffy McJeffersonI'm going dark, dark, dark horse. That's dark. You know. I'm not he still need to get off the train. I'm not on the train. I'm just saying that there's there's a serious is a serious dark horse.
SPEAKER_06I think if I had to go second dark horse, it's a toss-up between LSU and oldness. I don't know. Lane Kiffin built stuff, built some at Oldness. He did. He did. But nobody loves Lane more than Lane. And I think that you know how he left and all that is really sad, and how it worked out is really sad. But I think he's gonna do some really good shit at LCU. My but but uh the team he left at Ole Miss has got a chip on their shoulder. That would be my second.
Jeffy McJeffersonUh but like Ole Miss.
SPEAKER_06Did Ole Miss play LCU OSU?
Jeffy McJeffersonI guess my really second one is uh and I'm stealing from LD because Texas Tech would be my second dark horse. If they're quarterback. Not if. I mean, it just doesn't matter if, but I'd probably go Texas Tech. I don't want them to win because I hate Texas Tech.
SPEAKER_01But does LSU play Ole Miss this year?
MikeGood question.
Jeffy McJeffersonDude, that would be a grudge game. Oh gosh. Could you imagine if LSU went to Ole Miss this year?
SPEAKER_01And lost. Lost.
MikeI would have a fucking giant Woody on that one because I'm not a Lincoln fan at all. Well, nobody is. But like he's a big enough fan of himself, but nobody else has to.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut he did turn around over.
SPEAKER_06No, no, I agree with you.
MikeResearch guy. But you're the one playing on the phone.
SPEAKER_06Well, I just have my notes that I you know, just like Pete has his, you know, cheers. Hey Pete, I think it's LSU play Old Miss this year? Can you do Google that? Oh
MikeI can go to my father cabinet. I can't use my phone because Pete's on the phone.
Jeffy McJeffersonSchedule. I don't know. I don't know if they do it. I haven't even looked at it.
MikeThat would be a must-watch game. I don't look at I want to see the camera focused on Lane Kiffin's face if it is.
Coaching Poaching And Lane Kiffin Drama
SPEAKER_06The whole situation, let's go back a little bit.
Jeffy McJeffersonIf they would if they played each other, don't you think we would have heard about it? It's a good point.
SPEAKER_06But let's go back to the situation. I mean, I mean Clemson.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Ole Miss. September 19th.
MikeOld Miss and L S U? Yeah. Really? Old Miss placed LSU? You said Clemson. Oh, you said LSU.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no, no. LSU. LSU. Versus Old Miss. Versus Old Miss at Old Miss.
SPEAKER_01Oh, at Old Miss. Oh, God. That's what I'm saying. Kevin's gonna get shit thrown at him. That's what we wanted. October 19th. Yes. Thank you, Pete. Yeah, 19th. Yeah. Let's go back to that.
SPEAKER_06That was just, I mean, the way the rules are, they should have let in coach. I mean, I'm sorry.
MikeYou say the old day, players had to take a year off, they transferred. Coaches could leave anytime. Why didn't coaches have to say take a year off?
SPEAKER_06But they made it so that he couldn't coach Ole Miss in the playoffs. In the playoffs.
MikeYou just screwed the kids.
SPEAKER_06I mean, if if you would have asked him, he said, I'd I'd want to coach my guys. Come on. But the rules made it that he couldn't.
Jeffy McJeffersonAs much as I can stand lane Kiffin, I totally agree. He should have been able to coach his team. But for him, but then again. Not for him, but for his kids. Exactly. Yes. But I kind of wish they would have done that deal after the playoffs.
SPEAKER_04Right.
Jeffy McJeffersonThey could have a they couldn't have the rule we have they can have the covert deal. It should be a dark deal.
SPEAKER_06After the season.
Jeffy McJeffersonYou cannot. And then announce that shit.
SPEAKER_01You're right, man. There's no recruiting before the season's over.
SPEAKER_06That was just none of this shit. The way that went down, that was yeah.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut he did poach all the staff. And then that's your right as a coach. If you're gonna go somewhere else. Yeah.
MikeAfter you're done, yes, but you cannot, there should be a thing there where you cannot go looking before the season's over.
SPEAKER_03Period. No, but don't have to don't the school have buyouts the same as the coaches have buyouts?
Jeffy McJeffersonThey do. If you fire him. But he wasn't fired.
SPEAKER_03If he would leave, wouldn't he pay some money back? Or I mean they signed contracts for the other.
MikeBut like LSU should pay a penalty for going after him before the season's over. If LSU wants to get him, great, you're gonna pay this giant penalty for doing that.
Jeffy McJeffersonWell, you know stop this shit. You know, Oklahoma went through this with the bitch out west, Lincoln Riley. And, you know, because he he already had the freaking USC deal done, but and we didn't know anything about it. And and until like he tried to throw the game against Oklahoma State and all this sort of shit. He didn't even want to play Caleb Williams at all because he wanted to keep him with him to go to go to USC. And so I guess there's there's that too. So it's hard, it's a hard deal, man. I mean, keeping it under wraps like that, you know, because we were pretty pissed. I mean that. He's he's the only coach in Oklahoma football history that's ever left the program. Program. Program on his own. I mean, there's no other he's either been they've either retired or they've been released. He's the only one ever that left the program.
MikeHeisman trophy winners, right? Baker. The guy from the kid that played for Eric.
Jeffy McJeffersonCarlin Murray. Well, Caleb won it as UFC.
MikeYes, but I mean he's he's coached them. I mean, I'm gonna coach that has three three Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks yet couldn't win.
SPEAKER_06That's why they're my dark horse. This year.
Jeffy McJeffersonThat's his dark horse. He's my ability guy, or whatever his name is.
MikeBecause the guy from Northwestern's defensive coordinator. USC can't win because they can't play defense. They have a new defensive coordinator.
Jeffy McJeffersonIf they could beat Oregon, it's TCU not Northwestern.
SPEAKER_06If they beat Orion, Gary Patterson. If they beat Oregon early in the schedule. What what what the hell are you talking about? I'm sorry. I'm a duck fan. But I gotta I gotta realize there's some it's the it's the Big Ten. There's tough teams out there.
MikeYeah, it's tough. And we have a tough schedule. We got them all this year. That's a big game.
SPEAKER_06That's a big game early in the schedule of who's gonna rule the Big Ten. USC Oregon.
MikeI think you're gonna find that Dante Moore is gonna be to the point where he has taken another level of leadership, decision making, and quarterbacking skills that he didn't do last year. I mean, I I I truly think, and plus we have a defense that is gonna be stuffed.
SPEAKER_06There's your last your last point is your best point. Yeah.
MikeYeah, because Dante Wells.
SPEAKER_06Never has Oregon had a defense like they had this year.
MikeAmen. So like I say, it's gonna be I can't wait.
SPEAKER_01I I'm I I I the fact that football is back.
All-Day Saturdays And Football Obsession
SPEAKER_01Are you stoked for the season, Pete? Oh my god. Are you stoked?
SPEAKER_03I'm kind of stoked for the season. I'm kind of want to see what Michigan brings, but also the other schools because I'm curious about, like you said, USC. USC used to be a powerhouse, but last 10, 15 years didn't do shit.
Jeffy McJeffersonOh I don't give a fuck about USC.
SPEAKER_03I don't give a fuck about USC. No, but I'm I'm I'm just curious. None of us here. I'm a Michigan fan, but I'm also a college, a college football fan. So we all watch football.
MikeWe watch them all, baby.
Jeffy McJeffersonThat's what we do. We watch them. Man, we uh hey, okay. Do we watch do we watch games all the way fucking even like the old Pac-12 at night and shit like that?
SPEAKER_01Dude, the fucking thing you get up at six in the morning towards game day playing, right?
Jeffy McJeffersonGod doesn't matter who's playing.
SPEAKER_01We watch fucking college football, right?
MikeYou start at 6 a.m. game day.
Jeffy McJeffersonPete, I know you do the group.
MikeDo you do get Pete? Do you guys get game day on the SPN there? I don't know what time you get it, but game day is just like and I hate Nick Saban, but he's awesome.
SPEAKER_03I can watch every fucking game life. All day live. It doesn't matter. High school, high school, college football, NFL, I've got a fucking all.
MikeI opt out on high school, but you got game day in the morning. You've got games that start at 9, the 12, the 3, the the 6th, 7th. Yeah, you got the Saturday is amazing. I love professional football, but Saturday is a special day in the fall. It is.
Jeffy McJeffersonIt is.
SPEAKER_03And I but it's go ahead. What the fuck happened? What the fuck happened with Saturday night lights, Friday night lights? Because they're they're playing Thursday, Wednesday. Come on.
MikeThat's the pros.
SPEAKER_03Well, dude, I mean, I I I watch even even college. Even college. Well, the the smaller schools play normally.
Jeffy McJeffersonI watch Mac and you know, Mac, you know, the the Mac, you know, they always play like Tuesday or Wednesday night and show I watch Mac. Yeah, smaller schools play on it. I just watch it, man. It's just it's fucking football. Yeah. It's better than watching Family Guy.
SPEAKER_03I watch, I watch, I watch, I try to watch Winston Ball games. We watch it.
Jeffy McJeffersonBut they play Yeah, but I but I I follow three teams.
SPEAKER_03That's Hawaii, Michigan, Colorado, and Michigan. Colorado, because Colorado was the first real life college football game I ever saw in my life. That was at Hawaii. I went to a Hawaii game at Hawaii. So I never went to a Michigan game. So that's that's why I kind of follow three teams.
Jeffy McJeffersonThat's
Tailgate Plans And Closing Remarks
Jeffy McJeffersonthat's awesome. Good answer.
SPEAKER_06I I again extend my invitation for you to come watch Michigan at at Oregon Ducks Stadium, Austin Stadium.
SPEAKER_03And I swear to God, if I if if I can chip in with the money and get some spare time for my work, I will be there because that's I've been to the Pro Bowl, I've I've watched some some college games, but not at mainland college games. And if I can see Michigan play, why not?
Jeffy McJeffersonIf you if you do that, Pete, I'm not gonna get to go to the game, obviously, but I'll go to Eugene.
